An Apicoectomy is the Surgical Removal of the infected tissue caused by the filtration of bacteria into the pulp chamber. During an Apicoectomy the Surgeon will make an incision into the bone right at the apex of the tooth. A CBCT 3D imaging helps our Surgeon locate the infection and surrounding hard tissues.

When is a tooth extraction necessary and inevitable?
The success rate for apicoectomy is very high. However, in very specific cases, apicoectomy does not represent a real solution to the problem or is contraindicated. The decision will be made by the periodontist based on the patient’s medical history and the diagnostic consultation. If the patient has any of the following conditions, the apicoectomy will not be possible and the tooth will have to be extracted:
- If the tooth already has false canals or a fracture.
- In acute infectious processes that present abundant bleeding.
- If the supporting bone has been affected.
- In case of extensive damage to the tooth root.
- If the area in which the infection has occurred is located close to the maxillary sinus.
- A very advanced periodontal disease (pyorrhea).
- In the event that the person has clotting problems that can lead to uncontrolled bleeding.
- If the tooth has longitudinal fractures.
